ISA Associates is conducting a three-year study of substance abuse prevention and intervention activities in the Integon Corporation. The project is being conducted by ISA staff, with the assistance and cooperation of both Integon and its managed care provider, Partners, Inc. The project involves the conduct of both a retrospective study and a prospective study of the Integon prevention/intervention program.
The retrospective study capitalizes on the research (a randomized design) and advanced forms of substance abuse prevention programming that ISA has been conducting at Integon, and focuses on an assessment of the impact of the program on the participants' use and costs of treatment services. By accessing the managed care database, the effects of the program on employee participants' use and costs of treatment services will be assessed. (Data on the impact of the program on participants' substance abuse attitudes and behavior were already collected as part of a NIDA-supported research project.)
The prospective, quasi-experimental study consists of the continuation and expansion of the substance abuse prevention/intervention activities at the Winston-Salem, NC offices of Integon, with the Burlington, NC offices of Integon serving as the comparison site. The major data collection strategies to be applied at both sites will be (a) annual surveys of Integon employees (n = 1,500) and their spouses, along with (b) a specially constructed database on employee treatment/costs, human resources, and EAP data derived from the managed care provider and Integon. Interventions at Winston-Salem will include: (1) group sessions on stress management and healthy eating with specially-designed substance abuse prevention components; (2) substance abuse prevention video and print materials; (3) special activities including a health fair; (4) pamphlets promoting the benefits of seeking assistance through the EAP; and (5) special training focusing on prevention and early intervention with adolescents.
Products of the research will include: (1) a report and related articles on the impact of substance abuse prevention and early intervention, and implications for the integration of such services into Workplace managed care; and (2) a Replication Manual designed to provide guidance to organizations wishing to implement similar programs.
